Travel Teams

COMPETITIVE

The Warwick Youth Basketball (WYB) program has one competitive travel “A” team per grade for Warriors boys and Lady Warriors girls in grades 3-8. Players are selected by the coaching staff and objective evaluators based on their attitude, effort, commitment to the team, fundamental skills, conditioning level, and prior basketball experience. Each team has 8-9 total players (coach’s decision).

ABOUT COMPETITIVE

  • Teams practice twice a week.

  • Teams participate in approximately 20-25 total games which include 12 Metro West League regular-season games, 3-4 RIYBA/out-of-state tournaments, the Rhode Island State and New England Championships.

  • Players are expected to attend all practices and games.

  • Players must consider WYB travel as their primary team during the winter season with the exception of a school affiliated team.

  • Coaches must develop each player and their team in a competitive environment.

  • Playing time will vary from player to player (see minimum playing time minutes by grade in our FAQs) and is based on performance and specific team needs.

DEVELOPMENTAL

Typically, WYB has one developmental travel “B” team in grades 3-8. Teams are competitive but considered less of a commitment. Players are selected by the coaching staff and objective evaluators based on their attitude, effort, skill level, and potential to improve. Each team has a minimum of 9 total players.

ABOUT DEVELOPMENTAL

  • Teams will practice once or twice a week.

  • Teams participate in approximately 16-20 total games which include 10-12 regular-season games in the “B-Division” of the Metro West League, 2-3 RIYBA tournaments, and the Rhode Island State Championships.

  • Players and family members must balance the WYB practice/game schedule around other teams and/or sports.

  • Coaches are instructed to focus on individual player development, basic skills, and teamwork.

  • Playing time is relatively equal but will vary based on performance and commitment level.
